Historical Note
Jackson County was the 14th county to be organized in the Indiana Territory when it was formed from Clark, Jefferson, and Washington Counties on January 1, 1816. Named after Andrew Jackson, its first county seat was Vallonia. Vallonia was the site of one of three forts built in the county during the War of 1812 to protect the white settlers living in the area. The fort was occupied until 1814, with Major John Shields Tipton and his militia Rangers garrisoned there in 1813. The fort was demolished in 1821.
