Scope and Contents
This collection contains copies of letters written by Allen Varner during the California Gold Rush, including an April 29, 1849 letter he wrote to his family in Indianapolis, Indiana from Independence, Missouri on his way to the gold fields; a November 12, 1849 letter written from "Rectors Bar, north branch of the middle fork of the Sacramento" to his brother and friends; a March 5, 1850 letter written from "Rector's Bar, Middle branch of American fork of the Sacramento"; and a December 15, 1852 letter sent to his parents from San Francisco letting them know he was coming home.

Biographical Note
Allen Varner was born in April 1825 in Wayne Township, Marion County, Indiana to David and Jemima (Pugh) Varner. In the spring of 1849, he traveled to the gold fields of California and remained until December 1852. Following his return from California, Varner settled on a farm in Ross Township, Edgar County, Illinois. He served in Company D, 25th Illinois Infantry as a first lieutenant and then a captain during the U.S.Civil War. He married Jemima Dickson in June 1864 and they had 6 children. Varner died at the age of 85 on July 31, 1910.
