Historical Note

In 1836, the Mammoth Internal Improvement Act was passed by the Indiana General Assembly and signed into law by Governor Noah Noble. The act authorized the appropriation of funds for the construction of canals, turnpikes, and railroads throughout the state and the Whitewater Canal was one of the projects funded by the legislation. After a few years, the act's strain on financial resources forced the state into bankruptcy and the Whitewater Canal project was turned over to White Water Valley Canal Company, a privately financed organization chartered in January 1842. The company finished the portion of the canal between Brookville and Cambridge City, but a series of floods and a costly law suit forced it into receivership in 1855 and the company was later purchased by the Whitewater Valley Railroad Company in 1865.
