Historical Note
On October 10, 1861, Governor Morton sent out an appeal to the women of Indiana asking for assistance in supplying Hoosier soldiers with shirts, socks, blankets, and other items to help make them comfortable and healthy. The women of La Porte County responded, organizing the Soldiers Relief Society on October 12, 1861. The society sent necessities to the soldiers throughout the Civil War, with the last box sent to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee on September 13, 1865. The work of women during the Civil War led to the organization in 1883 of the Woman's Relief Corps, an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.).
