The collection consists of correspondence, receipts, accounts, financial and legal documents, reports, publications, and ephemera from John Johnson and the Johnson family in Marion County, Indiana, ranging from 1853 to 1933, regarding business, family life, politics, and the local freemason lodges, specifically Keyston Lodge No. 251 and Millersville Lodge No. 156.

Biographical Note

John Johnson was born on August 22, 1827 to Robert (1784-1854) and Sarah (Guthrie) Johnson (1791-1868), both Irish immigrants, in Ohio. He had three brothers, Robert (1828-1914), Richard (1832-1900), and George G. (1835-1884). Johnson worked as a wagon maker and lived in Lawrence, Marion County, Indiana in 1850. He married Nancy Thomas (1834-1870) on April 1, 1856 in Marion County and they had four children: Albert Manwell (1857-1935), Ira Edwin (1859-1929), Clara Elizabeth (1862-1944), and Hugh E. (1867-1946). Nancy Johnson died on February 4, 1870. Johnson owned a brick making company in Castleton, Marion County, Indiana. He served as secretary of the Keystone Lodge No. 251 of the Free and Accepted Order of Masons from the 1870s to 1890s. Johnson was also a farmer. Johnson died from a railroad accident on April 27, 1904 in Castleton and was buried in Fall Creek Union Cemetery in Indianapolis.
