Scope and Contents

This collection includes a Christmas card sent to Lois Stombaugh by her older brother Richard Stombaugh while he was serving in the U.S. Army in France during World War II. The card includes an image of a soldier in uniform sitting with a boy and a girl and "MERRY XMAS 1944" printed at the top. Richard's handwritten note to Lois is on the reverse side and dated December 8, 1944.

Biographical Note

Richard E. "Dick" Stombaugh was born September 14, 1922 in Goodland, Indiana to Fremont and Mary (Ellsworth) Strombaugh. A 1940 graduate of Goodland High School, he served with the 3597 GM Truck Company, 393rd Battalion during World War II. He married Dorothy Sell on June 14, 1943 and they had 3 children. He worked as an electrical engineer for NIPSCO in Monticello and retired in 1980. He passed away at the age of 91 on February 8, 2014.
