This collection contains items from Walter S. Commons regarding the Indiana State Dairy Association, including a copy of the booklet Fourth Annual Report of the Indiana State Dairy Association published following the annual meeting held at Crown Point December 28-29, 1893; a ribbon badge from the fifth annual meeting held in Centreville (now spelled Centerville) December 27-28, 1894; and two programs from the fifth annual meeting.

Biographical Note

Walter Scott Commons was born March 28, 1853 in Center Township, Wayne County, Indiana to David P. and Bethena J. (Carter) Commons. He attended common schools and Earlham College. Commons was a successful farmer and also operated a creamery in Richmond for several years. He was a member of the Indiana State Dairy Association and served as the organization's secretary-treasurer in the 1890s. Commons was a member of the Wayne County Council for 10 years and later served as a state senator in 1911 and 1913. He married Sarah A. Maudlin in December 1874 and they had three children. A lifelong resident of Wayne County, Commons died at his home in Centerville on April 29, 1921.
