This collection contains a copy of Turner in Indiana, a book published in 1963 by Kurt F. Pantzer, Sr. about his collection of Joseph Mallord William Turner pencil sketches, watercolor drawings, oils, and engraved works that were exhibited at the University of Notre Dame Art Gallery in February 1963. Of 150 bound copies printed, the volume in this collection is No. 96 and was inscribed to Lord and Lady MacDermott by Kurt and Kitty Pantzer on July 13, 1963. The volume was purchased around 2017 at a bookstore at Hay-on-Wye, United Kingdom and later donated to the library by Larry Bramble.

Biographical Note

Kurt Friedrich Pantzer was born on August 21, 1892 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Dr. Hugo O. and Emma (Schmidt) Pantzer. He first attended Wabash College, then received his bachelor's and law degree from Harvard University. Pantzer practiced law in New York City for two years before returning to Indianapolis in 1922. He was associated with two Indianapolis law firms before becoming a partner at Barnes, Hickman, Pantzer, and Boyd in 1940 and became nationally known for his legal expertise. Pantzer married Katharine "Kitty" Ferriday on January 9, 1926 and they had 3 children. He owned the largest and most comprehensive collection of Joseph Mallord William Turner watercolors in the United States and loaned his collection to the Notre Dame University Art Gallery for an exhibition in February 1963. In 1972, his Turner collection was given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in memory of his parents. Pantzer died at the age of 86 on July 8, 1979.
