Scope and Contents

This collection contains photocopies of correspondence ranging from 1894 to circa 1915 of the Samuel T. Reeve family of Edwardsport, Indiana, including letters written by Samuel; his daughter Hulda; S.A., H.W., and Martha Johnson of Kingfisher, Oklahoma and Lawton, Oklahoma; David DeMoss of Warden, Washington; and a cousin from Morgantown, Indiana. The collection also includes photocopies of an October 19, 1870 document certifying that Samuel T. Reeve was elected a Vigo Township (Knox County, Indiana) Trustee; a June 30, 1880 appointment of Samuel as postmaster at Edwardsport; a three-page "Memoranda of Votes Received" regarding election results in 1890; a January 18, 1898 letter sent by Reeve to Assistant Secretary Davis at Washington, D.C. regarding his pension claim; and clippings of obituaries for Samuel Reeve from October 1919 and Robert Gilmore from September 1920.

Biographical Note

Samuel T. Reeve was born November 13, 1831 near Brownstown, Jackson County, Indiana to Joseph and Sarah (Ireland) Reeve. He later moved to Vigo Township, Knox County, Indiana. He served three years with Co. C, 80th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War. In 1867, he went into business with Ewald Villwock as a cabinet maker and undertaker. He bought out Villwock's interest in 1887 and continued the business for more than 30 years. He also served eight years as a trustee of Vigo Township. Samuel married Huldah H. Hargis in October 1854 and they had three children. Following Huldah's death in June 1877, he married Sebree Anna (Johnson) Worth in February 1879 and they had nine children, including David Franklin (1888-1988). David married Verna E. Wallace and they also had several children, including Vera Daisy (1910-2008), the donor of this collection. Samuel died at the age of 87 on October 1, 1919.
