Historical Note

The Hovey Institute and Workingman's Library Association was established in Mooresville, Indiana on July 14, 1855 with 79 members. Organized as a subscription library, each member agreed to donate two or more books and each paid a 50 cent membership fee. First located in a tailor shop, the library was later moved into the Holman Johnson Building on Main Street. Within a few years books began to go missing and the remaining volumes were moved to the local school to safeguard the collection before the library was eventually closed.

The Mooresville Public Library was established in 1912 and received a grant in 1913 from the Carnegie Corporation to construct the library's building, which was formally dedicated in January 1916.
