Historical Note

In 1870, the Howe Sewing Machine Company established a factory in Peru, Indiana. The business was called the Howe Factory until 1875 when it was succeeded by the Indiana Manufacturing Company. The company continued to manufacture sewing machine woodwork but also began manufacturing other items, including refrigerators and wooden rims for bicyles. For 30 years it was the largest factory in Peru, but after sustaining a loss of $160,000 due to the flood of March 1913, the company was forced into receivership and the business was purchased by the Shirk family and reorganized as the United States Refrigerator Company.
