Historical Note

On April 27, 1865, the steamboat Sultana exploded and sank seven miles north of Memphis, Tennessee. Of the reported 2,300 passengers, more than 1,700 people died, among there number just-released Union prisoners of war. The Sultana disaster occurred just 18 days after the April 9, 1865 surrender of General Robert E. Lee, and 13 days after the April 14 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The Sultana was built in 1863 in Cincinnati, Ohio. After the U.S. Civil War, the Sultana and other steamboats were commissioned to transport Union solders at $5 each from Vicksburg, Mississippi to Cairo, Illinois. The Sultana had docked at Memphis for coal, when a formerly repaired boiler exploded spreading fire throughout the ship. The event is often considered the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history.
