Scope and Contents

This collection includes a one-page handwritten letter sent by Mary H. Vawter of Nashville, Brown County, Indiana to Miss Mary E. Schell of the Indiana State Library. Dated June 1947 and sent with two copies of her "little book of poems," the letter mentioned that visitors were welcome and included directions on how to find her home.

Biographical Note

Mary Howey Murray was born June 30, 1871 in Baltimore, Maryland to Heron C. and Cordelia (Williams) Murray. She read Chautauqua college courses for four years and was a student at the Maryland Institute, Charcoal Club, from 1892 to 1900. An accomplished artist and poet, Murray met fellow artist John William "Will" Vawter while visiting Greenfield, Indiana and they married in Chicago, Illinois on November 19, 1902. They lived in Greenfield for a few years before moving to a farm in Brown County, Indiana. The Vawters divorced in 1923 and both continued to live in Brown County. Mary Vawter also owned a home in Mathews County, Virginia and moved there a few years before her death on March 28, 1950.
