Scope and Contents

This collection includes a six-page handwritten biographical sketch of Silas H. Farry. Transcribed by an unknown author from Combination Atlas Map of Fulton County, Indiana by A. L. Kingman, published 1883 (pp. 48-49). The biography includes information about Farry's parents, his wive's parents, and his children. The sketch was written on sheets of paper with the letterhead for Archie F. Young, painter and decorator of Chicago, Illinois from the 1910s. Archibald Farry Young was the son of Lucelia, Silas Farry's older daughter from his first marriage.

Biographical Note

Silas Harvey Farry was born July 16, 1819 in Warren County, Ohio to John Cephas and Elizabeth (Collins) Farry. When he was around 8 years old, the family moved near Troy in Miami County, Ohio. When he was 16, Farry went to live with Daniel Brown about 3 miles west of Troy and was contracted to work for Brown until he reached his majority, which occured in July 1840. That same year he traveled by foot to Fulton County, Indiana and after sometime purchased 80 acres in New Castle Township. Farry married Catharine Brown, Daniel Brown's daughter, in 1843 and they had five children. Following Catharine's death in April 1861, he married Ruth A. Roach in October 1861 and they had four children together. Farry died at his home at the age of 71 on January 6, 1891.
