"Romance of Real Life: A Tale of Iowa" letter

Scope and Contents

This collection includes a November 13, 1849 letter sent to John Milton Stanton of Dunlapsville, Union County, Indiana from W. Wright of Salem, Iowa. The letter has the heading "Romance of Real Life: A Tale of Iowa" and is a narrative of Wright's move to Iowa and his visit with a family who had moved there from Indiana in 1840. Wright adds a personal note to Stanton at the end, mentioning there were "plenty of girls, two fine ones" where he was boarding and that his school would commence in a day or two, presumably with him as the school teacher.

Biographical Note

John Milton Stanton was born February 23, 1826 in Union County, Indiana to Zaccheus and Elizabeth (Swain) Stanton. He was raised a Quaker but later joined the Methodist Episopal Church. Stanton married Sarah Freeman (1828-1909) and they had five children, four of whom livied to adulthood. He engaged in the mercantile business for over 50 years and served as postmaster of Quakertown for 34 years. A lifelong resident of Union County, Stanton died at the age of 74 on March 29, 1900.
