Historical Note

The Northern Indiana Historical Society was established in 1867 and for years was located in the old 1855 St. Joseph County Courthouse in downtown South Bend. In 1988, the society was given Copshaholm, the Oliver Mansion located in the West Washington Street Historic District. A new museum facility was built on the mansion's property and the organization moved to its new facility in 1994. In the 1990s, the operating name was changed to the Northern Indiana Center for History, then later shortened to Center for History. In 2014, its name was changed to The History Museum and was awarded accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums in 2015.
