Scope and Contents
This collection includes a September 26, 1846 dismission letter for Malinda Jeffries certifying she was a member in good standing with the Baptist church in Putnam County, Indiana and a June 4, 1850 letter sent by John C. Jeffries of Henry County, Kentucky to his brothers George and Harvey Jeffries of Putnam County informing them of their father's death. The collection also includes a photocopy of a March 9, 1966 letter written by Dove S. Wright from Prescott, Arizona and sent to Thomas Krasean at the Indiana State Library that contains some history of the Jeffries family and a brief mention of her own background.

Biographical Note
Dove Stewart was born November 22, 1878 in Putnam County, Indiana to Levi M. and Nancy (Jeffries) Stewart. She was the granddaughter of Harvey and Malinda (King) Jeffries. The Jeffries moved to Indiana from Kentucky following their marriage in 1835 and settle in Putnam County near Roachdale. Stewart became a school teacher and married LaGonda Wright in 1899. She was the mother of two daughters and had the distinction of being the first woman to hold public office in Putnam County, serving as county recorder for four years in the 1920s. Stewart the age of 89 on July 12, 1968.
