This collection contains military documents, invoices, notes, certificates, poetry, songs, ephemera, photographs, a diary, and a school journal and papers from Carl E. Austin, Sr., Carl E. Austin, Jr., and the Austin and Selb families in Indianapolis, Indiana and the United States, ranging from 1910 to 1961, regarding daily and military life, education, travel, business and social interests, and family.

The diary of Clara Selb and photographs of the family can also be found in this collection.

Biographical Note

Carl Edward Austin, Sr. was born on December 25, 1898 to Charles E. (1870-1960) and Ida Ellen (Krichbaum) Austin (1872-1946) in Elwood, Indiana. He worked as a salesman for Kipp Brothers and other novelty and greeting card companies in Indianapolis. He married Audrey Mildred Craig (1903-1978), who was an inspector for a hosiery manufacturer, on June 10, 1925 in Indiana and they had a son, Carl Edward, Jr., and a daughter, Jean E. He later owned his own business, Charm Craft Greeting Cards, Inc. Carl E. Austin, Sr. died on May 17, 1975 and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Carl E. Austin, Jr. was born on December 31, 1931 in Indianapolis. He attended Arsenal Technical High School and graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis and served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957, when he was honorably discharged due to an injury. After returning to the United States, he married Phyllis Ann Perrin on September 20, 1958 in Indianapolis.
