Historical Note

The Methodist Protestant Church has a common history with all other branches of Methodism and traces its origin back through the Methodist Episcopal Church. Disagreements regarding the governance of the church led to a Reform Movement within the church and later resulted in the organization of the Methodist Protestant Church in 1830. The General Conference of 1846 met in Cincinnati, Ohio and a request to divide the Indiana District into two conferences was acted upon. Conferences are made up of districts, which are groups of churches in a geographic area. In 1875, the General Conference approved the merging of the Indiana Conference and the North Indiana Conference and the merged conference was known as the Indiana Conference. The conference's Muncie District consisted of churches in east central Indiana.
