This collection includes photocopies of the several items from Jennie Wells Lehman: a program from the second commencement of the Indianapolis Female Institute held on June 26, 1862; an October 3, 1966 letter written by Lehman and sent to Edgar B. Smith of the Department of Public Instruction in Indianapolis; her one-page family history of the Vanhoutens; and a history she wrote about her grandfather Henry Wells that includes her early memories of Crown Point and brief biographical information about her husband and children dated October 1966.

Biographical Note

Jennie Myrtle Wells was born June 19, 1873 in Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana to Rodman H. and Emily (Vanhouten) Wells. She was the granddaughter of Frank Wells, the first sheriff of Lake County. Wells married Herman J. Lehman on November 9, 1898 and they had 4 children. In 1920, the Lehmans moved to Florida, where Herman later served as a state representative and as mayor of Sanford. Jennie Lehman was a member of the Sanford Woman's Club, the Sanford Presbyterian Church, and was a former regent of the Sally Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Jennie Lehman died at the age of 95 on August 5, 1968.
