Scope and Contents

This collection contains several items from Carroll and Mima Johnson of Bedford, Indiana, including two essays written by Mary Francis Glover regarding the Jamestown Settlement (April 10, 1871) and Mammoth Cave (May 30, 1873); a circular advertisement for "Object-Lessons in Physiology," a book written by Dr. Hamilton Stillson of Bedford to help common school teachers teach physiology to beginners without a textbook (circa 1884); an envelope addressed to J. M. Johnson (May 16, 1884); a receipt made out to John Glover for an account with J. T. Freeland, M. D. of Bedford (June 6, 1892); and an advertising card for Buckskin trousers from the Buckskin Breeches Company of Evansville bearing on one side of the card a pen and ink drawing with this soliloquy: "I don't know nothin', I don't owe nothin', I don't own nothin', I don't want nothin', So I'm perfectly happy" (circa 1909).

Biographical Note

Jemima "Mima" E. Johnson was born June 11, 1894 in Orange County, Indiana to John J. and Laura (Gerkin) Johnson. She married Carroll A. Johnson December 31, 1916. Carroll was born August 4, 1889 in Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana to John M. and Emma A. (Glover) Johnson. Carroll's mother was the daughter of John and Olive (Shaw) Glover and the sister of Mary Frances Glover. Carroll Johnson died on July 5, 1969 and Mima died a few months later on November 29, 1969.
