Scope and Contents
This collection includes Dr. Fritz Herzog's correspondence and photocopied articles ranging from 1894 to 1976 regarding Indiana House Bill no. 246, a 1897 bill introduced to establish "a new mathematical truth" by changing the value of pi. Authored by Edwin J. Goodwin, M.D. and introduced by Taylor I. Record, the bill passed the House, but a motion for indefinite postponement in the Senate carried. Dr. Herzog corresponded with Professor Will Edington of Depauw University and Professor Arthur Hallerberg of Valparaiso University and the articles are from various publications, including American Mathematical Monthly,Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Sciences,The Scientific Monthly,Mathematics for the Million,American Scientist,Phi Kappa Phi Journal,The Atlantic Monthly, and theIndianapolis Star.

Biographical / Historical
Fritz Herzog was born on December 6, 1902 in Posnan, Poland and immigrated to the United States in 1933. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1935 and joined the faculty of Michigan State University in 1943. A professor emeritus following his retirement in 1973, he passed away at the age of 98 on November 21, 2001.
