Historical Note

The word "turnverein" comes from the German words turnen, "to practice Gymnastics," and Verein, "a club or union." In 1851, two turnvereins were established by German immigrants in Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Turngemeinde and the Indianapolis Socialistischer Turnverein. They merged a year later and following the U.S. Civl War, the club renamed itself the Indianapolis Socialer Turnverein. The Socialer Turnverein was housed in different downtown locations until Das Deutsche Haus was built at 401 E. Michigan Street in 1894. Built as a "house of culture" for the mind and body, an additional west wing was built in 1898. Due to anti-German sentiments during World War I, Das Deutsche Haus was renamed the Athenaeum in 1918. The Athenaeum was awarded the National Historic Landmark designation in 2016.
