Scope and Contents

The collection contains primarily personal letters exchanged between Winifred L. Henninger and the Nelson family of Jefferson County, Indiana ranging from 1877 to 1933, concerning their family history and original settlement there. There is also a Civil War-era letter written by Clara Nelson to a Union soldier stationed at Camp Morton in Indianapolis. Other documents include a program for a Sunday School convention of the Second District Marion County Sunday School Association at the Hall Place M.E. Church; Berean Lesson Leaf Bible lessons; a Home Insurance Company Policy of the Butlerville, Indiana I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 421; a resolution of respect composed by the Butlerville Indiana Mason Lodge 219 honoring Hiram Gale Nelson; and a newspaper clipping of poetry.

Biographical Note

Winnifred L. Henninger was a United States civil service employee for 37 years at Washington D.C. She retired in 1955. A native of Cloverdale, Indiana she spent most of her life in Washington DC. She moved to Indianapolis in 1966.
