Scope and Contents

This collection includes photocopies of an April 23, 1892 letter sent to E. (Edgar) J. Thickstun of Belmont, Indiana from The Patentees' Union of Indianapolis, Indiana in response to a letter they received from Thickstun about selling his patent; a handwritten advertisement for the sale of his patent from circa 1893; and an unused supplementary agreement from the American Patent Agency of Cincinnati, Ohio from January 1894 that includes the signature of the manager, O.J. Bailey.

This collection also includes photocopies of a May 30, 1893 letter sent to "Dear friend Ada" from Kate, most likely Catherine J. Smith Whisenand, a dressmaker in Bloomington, Indiana; a business card for Doctor Mossop of Brown County; and an October 21, 1857 letter written by Mary A. Bollman of Decatur, Adams County, Indiana and sent to "Esteemed Friend William."

Biographical Note

Edgar J. Thickstun was born in February 1861 to John and Charlotte (Reed) Thickstun. His sister Ada was born in December 1857. Edgar was a farmer and filed a patent for a band cutter and feeder for a thrashing machine in June 1891. Neither Edgar nor Ada married and they lived together on a farm near Belmont in Brown County, Indiana. William Mossop (1851-1922), son of Dr. Stephen B. Mossop, boarded with the Thickstuns for a number of years. Edgar Thickstun died on January 25, 1930 of Bright's disease. Ada Thickstun died at the Madison State Hospital on January 12, 1944.
