Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopies of Adonijah P. Hulings's 1863 pocket diary. A note he entered at the beginning of the diary states that he purchased it on December 17, 1862 in Memphis, Tennessee during the time he was serving with the 69th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He began his December 1862 entries in the memoranda section and then filled out the daily entries throughout 1863. The first page of the photocopies also includes the notation that the diary pages were sent to Eunice (Parker) Mannen "for copy" in June 1965 by Mr. Huling's son Russell Hulings of Sidney, Montana.

Biographical Note
Adonijah Peacock Hulings was born August 1, 1842 in Randolph County, Indiana to Auley M. and Margaret (Peacock) Hulings. During the U.S. Civil War, he mustered into Company D, 69th Indiana Infantry Regiment on August 9, 1862 and was discharged due to disability on May 22, 1863. Following the war, he returned to Randolph County and married Rachel Willis. She passed away in Indianapolis in 1868. He moved to Iowa then moved again to Jewell County, Kansas to homestead in 1871. He married Rachel Jane Roberts around 1874 and they had 9 children. They later moved to Missouri and then moved to Richland County, Montana to homestead 320 acres in 1912. Hulings passed away at the age of 78 in Sidney, Montana on March 14, 1921.
