Historical Note

In 1916, Indiana celebrated its centennial and the state's counties, cities, and towns organized pageants and other projects to highlight the history of their communities and show the progress made over the decades. Posey County is located in the southwestern corner of the state and celebrated the state's 100th anniversary in its county seat, Mount Vernon, September 12-13, 1916. Along with a parade, speeches, and concerts, the main event of the county's celebration was a water pageant given before 15,000 spectators on the Ohio riverfront. The pageant was written by Nora C. Fretageot of New Harmony, Indiana and was directed by Mrs. Mary H. Flanner of Indianapolis.
