Historical Note

During May 1-5, 1971, over 40,000 activists gathered in Washington, D.C., following the April 24 March on Washington, for May Day (or Mayday), a large-scale series of nonviolent demonstrations against the Vietnam War. More than 12,000 people were arrested, constituting the largest mass arrest in American history. Ultimatley, most of the protesters were release without charges and the ACLU won a class-action lawsuit on behalf of the detained protestors, who were awarded monetary compensation for violation of the constitutional rights of free assembly and due process.

----

The People's Peace Treaty was a document devised by representatives of student organizations from Vietnam and the United States during December 1970. It was part of a collaborative effort to end the Vietnam War and endorsed by a number of politicians and public figures, such as Noam Chomsky, Rock Hudson, Eugene J. McCarthy, and Daniel and Phillip Berrigan.
