Scope and Contents
This collection includes a typewritten copy of "Charter Members of the Salem Christian Church in 1842," a six-page composition by Lennie Martin Berkey consisting of biographical sketches of the first 26 members of the church (circa 1942). The collection also includes a typewritten copy of "A Great Church is Born," a 1942 script for a play containing a prologue that recounts the establishment of the Disciples of Christ and the Christian church taken from a program prepared by Mrs. Cecil Cheverton, followed by five scenes that depict the founding of the Christian Church at Salem through the dialogue of several of the founding members.

Historical Note
The Salem Christian Church in Washington County, Indiana was established on September 10, 1842 with 26 founding members. The church was established by individuals who were trying to get away from denominational traditions and man-made rules and wanted to use the Bible as their only "rule of faith and practice." Today, the church is known as the First Christian Church of Salem, Indiana.
