Scope and Contents

The collection consists primarily of John William Dickerson's correspondence and papers from his time in the army to his parents in Knightstown, Indiana, ranging from 1966 to 1969. The letters describe his training, army life, Vietnam, travels to Australia, and family matters. Also included in the collection are issues of the Hook and Star publication (1967-1968).

Biographical Note

John William Dickerson was born in 1948 and lived in Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana. He served in the United States Army during from 1966 to 1969. His assignments included training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Sill, Oklahoma (June 1966-February 1967). Dickerson was active duty in Vietnam with C Battery, 3rd Battalion, 18th Artillery (May 967-April 1968); Company A, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry (August-November 1968); and with a Mobile Advisory Team working with Republic of Viatnam troops (November 1968-April 1969). In April 1969, Dickerson was wounded in action and returned to the United States.
