Scope and Contents

This collection includes an August 20, 1947 letter written by Dorothy Blake Williams and sent to Mrs. I. J. Good of Indianapolis. Written on the letterhead of the White River Branch of the Women's Society of World Service of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, the four-page handwritten missive was sent with a copy of Mrs. Williams's booklet Intimations of Life in a Parsonage. She mentions Dr. I. [Irby] J. Good and Dr. [John A.] Cummins of Indiana Central College and also mentions sending copies of her booklet to Dr. [William] Brown, author of Mind and Personality, and to George Santayana, a retired Harvard philosophy professor. Williams's booklet is not part of this collection.

Biographical Note

Dorothy L. Blake was born October 6, 1901 in Anderson, Indiana to Rev. L. (Lawrence) O. and Flora (Rafferty) Blake. Her father was a pastor of the United Brethren church for forty years. The family moved to Great Falls, Montana in 1921 and Dorothy graduated from the Montana State Teachers College in 1923. She taught school in Portage, Belt and Great Falls, Montana before returning to Indiana with her family in 1925. She taught school in Crawfordsville and Indianapolis before her marriage to Claude Williams, an official at the Braden Manufacturing Company in Terre Haute, on July 24, 1932. Following her marriage, she taught at the King Classical school from 1936 to 1945. She died at the age of 74 on October 27, 1975.
