Scope and Contents
The collection is composed of two loan certificates. The later certificate (of 1874) is a loan of the
City of Philadelphia, payable to E. Jessie Nippes of Philadelphia. This certificate for $100 was not
reimbursable until January of 1898. Till then, interest of 6 "per centum" per annum was payable
half-yearly. The certificate was recorded in The Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of
Philadelphia.
The earlier certificate (of 1853) for $500, payable to Randolph W. Evans, is a loan certificate of the
Disttict of Richmond, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The certificate was to bear interest at 6
"per centum" per annum payable on the first days of January and July. The bottom and greater
portion of the certificate consists of77 individual wanants of $15 each, payable by and punched
for the Treasurer of the District of Richmond.

Historical Note
In 1853, the Board of Commissioners of the Disllict of Richmond, acting under provisions of a
previous Act of Assembly of 1847, passed an Act to Incorporate the District of Richmond in the
State of Pennsylvania. Under the authority of this ordinance, the district issued loan certificates
payable to those buying such certificates.
