Scope and Contents

This collection includes correspondence, convention programs, yearbooks, directories, publications, calendars, financial papers, contracts and other legal documents, and newspaper clippings from Leo Baumann and the International Typographical Union and Indianapolis Typographical Union No. 1 in Indianapolis, Indiana and the United States, ranging from 1927 to 1975 and undated, regarding Baumann's life, career, and work in professional associations. There is also his daugher Helen Baumann's school compositions and writings.

There is also an oversize collection of Baumann's papers, 1948-1974 (OB172).

Biographical Note

Leo Sebastian Baumann was born to Albert and Rosa (Horn) Baumann on September 23, 1895 in Indianapolis, Indiana He was the sixth of eight children, including Albert, Mary, Carl J., John F., Louis, Frank, and Anna. Baumann married Catherine Schulhoff, with whom he had three daughters: Barbara, Anna C., and Helen Rose. He served in the United States Army from September 4, 1918 to January 28, 1919 and worked as a linotype operator and printer. Baumann was a member of the Indianapolis Typographical Union No. 1, serving as its president for 14 years, and also secretary of the Indianapolis Allied Printing Trades Council for same amount of time. Additionally, he served on the board of appeal for the state of Indiana, and the Selective Service System, Southern Judicial District for 22 years, serving as president and secretary during that time. Baumann retired in 1961. He died on December 18, 1976 and was buried in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Indianapolis.
