Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopies of correspondence ranging from 1836 to 1855 related to the fur trade partnership of Lewis Benjamin Berthelet and James Aveline of Peru, Indiana and Berthelet family correspondence. Besides Berthelet family members, other correspondents include John B. Richardville, Allen Hamilton, John A. Graham, and the New York businesses of Suydam, Sage and Co. and Grant and Barton. The collection also includes a January 18, 1846 letter sent to James Aveline from Spear Spencer Tipton of Logansport. The items in this collection were copied at the Miami County Historical Society in 1975.

Biographical Note
Louis Benjamin Berthelet was born in 1804 in Detroit, Michigan. He married Mary Aveline (sometimes spelled Avaline) in Fort Wayne, Indiana on May 20, 1834. Berthelet moved to Peru, Indiana and formed a partnership with Francis Godfroy, chief of the Miami, under the firm name of Berthelet and Godfroy. The partnership was dissolved in June 1837 and he then formed a partership with his wife's brother, James Aveline. The partnership of Berthelet and Aveline ended around 1847. Berthelet died a couple years later in January 1849 and Aveline died in December 1877.
James Aveline was born October 14, 1807 in Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana. His married Catherine Comparet in a civil ceremony conducted by Allen County probate judge, William Ewing, and on February 13, 1931, their nuptial benediction was given by a Father Badin and was recorded as the first marriage in the Catholic church at Fort Wayne.
