Silas Clark, Civil War letters

 Collection — Folder: S2162
Identifier: S2162

Scope and Contents

For the most part, the collection consists of both positive and negative images of letters written by Silas Clark to David Williams and David Charters from 1861 to 1865. Little attention is given to camp life, the emphasis falling more to details of battle. Specific geographic references are given (e.g. Grafton, city of Buchanan, Huttonville, Clarksburgh, Wheeling, Rich Mountain, Monogahela River, Pensacola) although the names of states are commonly omitted. Names of persons are also provided (e.g. Major Burton, John C. Smith, Donaldson). Specific references to Generals Lee and Grant, along with hopes for the taking of Richmond, appear in the letters of November 2, 1864 and May 25, 1864(?). Specific regiments are sometimes named, along with numbers of forces, numbers of wounded, and numbers of the dead. One letter comments extensively on the local politics of the time.
