Historical Note
The history of the Methodist Episcopal church in Porter County, Indiana can be traced back to 1835 when missionary minister Stephen Jones was sent to the Deep River Mission and Porter and Lake Counties became his pastoral charge. Deep River was renamed the Kankakee Mission and later the Valparaiso Circuit. The first class in Valparaiso was organized by Pastor Willim J. Forbes in 1840 and the first Methodist house of worship in Valparaiso was completed in 1849. In 1859, the Methodists founded the Valparaiso Male and Female College (now Valparaiso Univeristy), one of the nation's first coeducational colleges.
