Historical Note

The small town of Kirklin was established in 1837 and is located in Kirklin Township, Clinton County, Indiana. The Methodist Episcopal Church was the first church organized in the township and its original location was about a mile north of town. The congregation met in a schoolhouse before a church was built around 1840 and christened "New Salem." It is believed that around 1870 the church abandoned its building and the congregation moved into town, first meeting in a blacksmith shop then later in an undertakers before building a new church sometime between 1871 and 1875. Though renovated several time, the old church was still the congregation's home when it celebrated its homecoming in October 1960. The building was later sold and is now a private residence.
