Historical Note

The Nobles Manufacturing Company was organized in 1866 and produced carpenter's braces and other specialty carpentry tools. The company sold out and the Elmira Nobles Manufacturing Company was formed on March 1, 1871. In April 1877, Solomon L. Gillett and Robert T. Turner took over the business and operated the firm under the name of Gillet and Company. The company continued to manufacture augers, bits, and other tools until it was sold to Connecticut capitalists in 1886 and the business in Elmira was abandoned.
