Biographical Note

Henry Underwood Johnson was born October 28, 1850 in Cambridge City, Indiana to Nimrod Hoge and Katharin [Catherine Coyle Underwood] Johnson and was the brother of Robert Underwood Johnson, a famous writer. He attended the Centerville Collegiate Institute at Earlham College where he studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1872 and began his practice in Centerville, Indiana. He married Helen [Hellen] Culver on December 7, 1872, in Wayne County, Indiana, and they had four children. He was the prosecuting attorney for Wayne County from 1876-1880 and a member of the Indiana State Senate 1887-1889. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1891 and served until 1899. While in Congress he served as the Chairman of the Committee on Elections. He lived in St. Louis, MO for some time, returning to Richmond, IN before his death on June 4, 1939. He is buried in the Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Indiana.
