Biographical / Historical

The American Boone descendants of George Boone I began when his son George Boone II (1866-1744) and his wife, Mary Mogridge (or Maugridge) Boone, arrived with their family from England in 1717. They had nine children that grew to adulthood, including sons George IV (1690-1753) and Squire (1696-1765). George IV was the father of Josiah Noah Boone (1726-1814) and Squire was the father of Daniel Boone (1734-1820), the legendary frontiersman and folk hero. Josiah had ten children, including sons Josiah Noah (1758-1825) and Jeremiah (1760-1832). A “Josiah Boon” and a “Jeremiah Boon” are listed as having served in the Lincoln County Militia during the Revolutionary War as part of a 32 day expedition against the Indians under General George Rogers Clark in the fall of 1782. Jeremiah was the father of several children and his daughter Charlotte (1794-1883) married Reuben Mayfield (1792-1861) in 1814. Their son Alexander Campbell was the father of Reuben Newton Mayfield (1859-1939) the author of several Boone family histories and the donor of this collection.
