Scope and Contents

This collection consists of variety of documents from the Ripley County Bar Association in Ripley County, Indiana ranging from 1920 to 1934. Folder one includes 30 pages from the Association's record book containing the rules and bylaws, fee schedules, meeting minutes, and receipts and newspaper clippings related to Association banquets and the deaths of members or their family members. There is also a handwritten draft of the rules and bylaws.

Along with additional correspondence, receipts, and fee schedules, folder two includes a circular with the heading "Some Facts Why Ripley County Should Comprise a Judicial Circuit" from circa 1928, the American Bar Association, Section of Criminal Law and Criminology report on the Committee on Psychiatric Jurisprudence for the Year 1928-1929, and a November 2, 1932 resolution by the Ripley County Bar Association in support of a proposed amemdment to the Indiana Consitution pertaining to admission to the bar.

One additional item included in the collection is a pamphlet containing the schedule of fees approved by the Ripley County Bar Association on March 31, 1960 and approved by the Ripley Circuit Court on May 9, 1960.

Historical Note

The Ripley County Bar Association was organized on May 21, 1920. The purpose of the association was to regulate fees and promote social and professional relations among its members. All the attorneys practicing in the Ripley County, Indiana became active members and retired attorney Thomas Willson and Judge John R. Carney were made honorary members. Michael F. Bohland was elected president and Charles H. Willson was made secretary-treasurer.
