Historical Note
The cost of World War II to the United States government was about $321,000,000,000. Taxes paid 41 percent of the cost and the remainder was paid by borrowing from financial institutions and the purchase of war bonds by American citizens. To drum up suport, war bond ralleys featured authors, singers, and Hollywood stars. Posters and other advertisements also featured patriotic images to stir Americans into buying bonds.
On the homefront and behind the battle lines, the American Red Cross provided a number of vital services during the war, including providing food and other supplies to prisoners of war. The organization conducted its own fund drives and received close to $785,000,000 in contributions.
