Historical Note

The antiwar group, Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam (CALCAV), emerged from an October 1965 meeting in New York City of 100 clergy who met to discuss ways the religious community could challenge U.S. policy regarding Vietnam. The multi-faith organization became a national network of local chapters and helped influence public opinion against the war, limited the government's options in conducting the war, and defended the right of dissent. By the early 1970s, the group began focusing on other social justice issues and dropped “Vietnam” from its name and became Clergy and Laymen Concerned (CALC).
