This collection contains a July 27, 1957 letter sent by Gerald R. Redding, president of Community Surveys, Inc., to Mrs. John Mason Moore of Zionsville regarding a report given to the organization by Dr. John R. Seeley on July 12. The collection includes the twenty-one page typewritten report by Dr. Seeley that discusses the three year research project on philanthropy in Indianapolis that culminated in the publication of the book Community Chest: A Case Study in Philanthropy.

Historical Note

On February 18, 1952, Community Surveys, Inc. was formally organized by more than 100 civic-minded residents of Indianapolis. The independent, non-profit organization was created to survey the welfare, health and recreation needs of the community and help guide the community's health and welfare spending. Initial funding for the organization was through the Lilly Endowment and the Indianpolis Foundation.
