Historical Note
The Cincinnati and Chicago Railroad Company built its railroad line through a number of communities in Indiana during the 1850s. Caleb Blood Smith, a former Indiana congressman who was later appointed Secretary of the Interior by Abraham Lincoln, served as president of the company from 1854 to 1859. Building out from Cincinnati, the railroad reached New Castle, Indiana in 1853. It was completed to Logansport in 1857 and reached La Crosse in LaPorte County in 1861. The 10.4 miles between La Crosse and Valparaiso were abandoned in 1865 after the Chicago and Great Eastern Railway built its own line from La Crosse through Crown Point and on to Chicago.
