Historical Note

The Indiana State Flag was adopted in 1917 as part of the state's centennial celebration flag design contest, the design winner was Paul Hadley of Mooresville, Indiana. The torch in the center represents liberty and enlightenment, the rays illustrate how far their influence can reach, the 19 stars represent the colonies admitted to the Union prior to Indiana and the one above the torch represents Indiana, the 19th state.
