Scope and Contents
This collection includes three items related to Owen County, Indiana: a February 22, 1839 handwritten letter sent by O.H. Gallup, secretary of the Owen County Botanico Medical Board, to Dr. Cary O'Neal of Greene County with a request for the doctor to deliver a lecture on the botanic theory and practice of medicine at the board's next meeting; a typewritten copy of a February 1, 1928 response letter sent to a Mrs. Thoms from Miss Alice Milligan of Cragmont, North Madison, Indiana regarding Ninian Steele; and two carbon copies from 1867 of form No. 29, a U.S. Post Office Department contract for transporting the mail. Please note that much of the information filled out on the government form has faded and is no longer legible.

Historical Note
Owen County, Indiana was organized in 1819 and the town of Spencer was made the county seat. In March 1820, Bethany Presbyterian Church was organized at Ninian Steele's farmhouse and Rev. John M. Dickey, a Presbyterian home missionary, served the church in its earliest years. On January 5, 1839, the Owen County Botanico Medical Board was organized "for the purpose of aiding and encouraging the system of Botanic Science."
