Historical Note
Hendricks County was established by the Indiana General Assembly in December 1823 and named in honor of Governor William Hendricks. Washington Township was organized at the same time as the county. An act past in March 1853 authorized the collection of taxes to be applied to the purchase of township libraries under the direction of the State Board of Education. The libraries were for the use of the citizens of the township and were under the control of the township trustees. In 1855, a 2 1/2 cents tax for each $100 valuation was to be collected in Washington Township for the library.
