Marshall County collection
Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: S2087
Scope and Contents
This collection includes photostatic copies of an account book containing entries ranging from 1845 to 1851. The account book may have been used by Daniel McElrath, a resident of Sligo in West Township. There are a few entries added in 1863 by a Miss Beatrix C. McElrath. The "C. Crocker" entered in the book is possibly Charles Crocker, an American railroad executive who owned a forge in the Sligo area in the 1840s. The original account book was in the possession of a "Mrs. Laura Tarrel Fogle" [most likely Louise Tyrrell Fogle] of Bourbon, Indiana and was copied by the Indiana State Library on December 16, 1939.
The collection also includes a list of the county residents who voted in the general election in November 1908. Compiled by William H. Matthew of Plymouth, Indiana, the list is organized by township and precinct.

Historical Note
Marshall County, Indiana was organized in 1836 and named in honor United States Chief Justice John Marshall. Plymouth is the county seat and there are ten townships: Bourbon, Center, German, Green, North, Polk, Tippecanoe, Union, Walnut, and West. A small settlement named Sligo was once located on the northern shore of Twin Lakes in West Township, but following a sharp decline, it disappeared.
