Scope and Contents

This collection contains several typewritten transcriptions of items related to Madison County, Indiana, including a February 4, 1846 letter sent to Washington and Catherine Allen in Lake County from Harrison and Jane Allen and postmarked from Alexandria; excerpts of newspaper clippings ranging from 1882 to 1883 from a scrapbook that belonged to Willard Makepeace of Chesterfield; a circa 1885 advertisement card for the Magic Pill Co. with Gid D. Searle, Druggist, Anderson, Indiana stamped on the back; two 1896 articles printed in the Anderson Plain Dealer regarding the Anderson Hydraulic Company; and information about the Madison County Historical Society from pages 110-112 of the 1897 book Historical Sketches and Reminiscences of Madison County, Indiana by John L. Forkner and Byron H. Dyson.

The collection also includes these additional items: a 1930 letter with the heading "Famous Anderson Mounds Become State Park Tuesday, October 7," typewritten on Indiana Historical Society letterhead; a copy of the circa 1942 typewritten essay "'Interesting Things to See In and About Anderson' or 'What You Can See On a Gallon of Gas'" by Thelma Epply; correspondence ranging from 1950 to 1952 from The American Guard, a statewide organization with headquarters in Anderson; a copy of "Reminiscences of Pendleton," a manuscript at the Pendleton Public Library that was copied by the Indiana State Library in 1927; and a copy of Small Town, U.S.A., a circa 1942 publication that promotes the town of Alexandria and has a label on the front cover that states "Restricted: This publication is not for distribution in the United States or to American civilian or military personnel overseas."

Historical Note

On November 10, 1823, Madison County, Indiana was formally organized. The first county seat was at Pendleton, then was moved to Anderson around 1828. Anderson is named in honor of Kikthawenund, a Delaware chief whose English name was William Anderson, and is on the site where Chief Anderson’s village was located. Other cities and towns in the county include Alexandria, Chesterfield, Elwood, and Lapel.
